#pb10for10 – Never Give Up

I’m so excited for this year’s #pb10for10, sponsored again by Cathy Mere and Mandy Robek. I chose a “Never Give Up” / growth mindset theme for my picture books. I think it’s a perfect theme for starting a new school year. Last year my class had a “Never Give Up” book basket that we would add to as we found the theme in many books we read. I found that it really gave us a positive focus, and a way to identify those “Never Give Up” moments in our own learning and lives. I finally got to read Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset, this summer, and I’m even more excited about sharing the growth mindset with my students this year.

Here are 10 books that I think do a great job of showcasing a never give up attitude and perseverance.

if i never forever endeavor

If I Never Forever Endeavor,  Holly Meade

My friend Lori shared this book with me last spring. I read it at least 3 times, and had a hard time giving it back! I obviously had to have my own. When I read it to my students they loved it, and immediately began sharing about things they were nervous to try.

the dot

The Dot, Peter H. Reynolds

A “Never Give Up” list wouldn’t be complete with out it! You must have this, and be sure to participate in Dot Day this year. I love the creativity that’s inspired by this story.

The Most Magnificent Thing

The Most Magnificent Thing, Ashley Spires

I especially love how the main character’s frustration and anger are shown. It’s an excellent example for students that struggle with failure and frustration.

good news bad news

Good News Bad News, Jeff Mack

Poor Rat. Nothing seems to be going his way, and he sure does let it get to him. However, Rabbit sees things in a different light. Eventually Rat catches on!

Go! Go! Go! Stop!

Go! Go! Go! Stop!, Charise Mericle Harper

This is such an excellent book about learning to work as a team. Go! and Stop! have to work together, and with the help of one more friend, they’ll get it just right.

it's tough to lose your balloon

It’s Tough To Lose Your Balloon, Jarrett J. Krosoczka

I so excited for this new book, which will be out September 8th. You must watch the book trailer (on the ThingLink above). Krosoczka seems to have really captured some of life’s little struggles, and put a brighter side spin on them.

a perfectly messed-up story

A Perfectly Messed Up Story, Patrick McDonnell

Peanut butter, jelly, finger prints and more threaten to ruin Louie’s story, and he’s ready to give up. You’ll laugh out loud as you watch Louie learn to persevere.

Everyone Can Learn To Ride A Bicycle

Everyone Can Learn to Ride A Bicycle, Chris Raschka

This in an excellent book for students to make personal connections with. Use it as a read aloud and let the student stories begin!

ok book

The OK Book, Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Such a perfect book to model goal setting and growth! It’s a perfect book for first week of school activities. We’re OK at all kinds of things. What will you be great at eventually?

It's Okay To Make Mistakes

It’s Okay To Make Mistakes, Todd Parr

Well this one’s pretty obvious! My favorite pages say “It’s okay to not know the answer. Asking questions helps you learn.” & “It’s okay to change your mind. Everyone is ready at a different time.” Bright, funny pictures and simple words send a very clear message! Be sure to download the coloring pages from the ThingLink!
